Understanding the ITpipes FieldVision Auto-Updater
Purpose: The purpose of this document is to provide ITpipes FieldVision users with a clear, step-by-step guide to the auto-update process, outline common troubleshooting scenarios, and explain what information to gather when contacting support.
Overview
ITpipes FieldVision updates are deployed frequently with new enhancements and features. For this, a tool called the ITpipes Auto-Updater comes included with ITpipes FieldVision. This way you are ensured you always have the latest features, bug fixes, and NASSCO compliance updates.
What to expect when an update is due
1. Update notification
When a user logs into ITpipes FieldVision, the application automatically queries the ITpipes configuration server to verify whether a newer, approved version is available for your organization.
2. Download & Installation
The installer will download the required files. A lightweight helper process (ITpipes Mobile Updater) downloads the required installer packages quietly in the background without obstructing active inspection workflows.
Once it finishes, the main ITpipes application will close automatically.
3. Background Completion
The final installation runs quietly in the background. You can monitor the status via the ITpipes update icon located in your Windows system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen).
The Windows background update service (ITpipesMobileUpdater) applies the update silently, allowing standard user accounts without local administrator rights to complete updates successfully
Common scenarios and quick fixes
The App Closed after running for a while and Seems to Have Disappeared
This is entirely normal behavior. FieldVision automatically terminates its active session to safely swap out system files.
Resolution: Simply wait a moment for the system tray update icon to finish before reopening FieldVision.
Network or Wi-Fi Interruptions
If your cellular hotspot or site Wi-Fi connection drops during the download phase, the auto-updater safely pauses or cancels the transfer to protect against corrupted files.
Resolution: Re-establish a stable network connection, verify internet access, and restart FieldVision to resume the update process.
System Time Check
If you experience secure connection errors during the update check, verify that your computer’s date and time are synchronized correctly, as an incorrect clock can block secure verification handshakes.
Resolution: Open Windows Date & Time settings and ensure your clock is synchronized automatically with an online time server.
Basic Requirements for Successful Updates
- Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is required for the application to download the update package.
- Local User Directory Permissions: Standard background installations require local user write permissions to the application staging directories and program installation paths.
- Endpoint Management & Security Controls: If your organization utilizes strict endpoint management software (such as AppLocker, BitLocker policies, or restricted user profiles), your internal IT team may need to assist with initial directory permissions or service registration.
Helpful Tips for IT Administrators
Required Endpoints / URLs: IT administrators must ensure that corporate firewalls and web proxies whitelist ITpipes update servers over HTTPS.
Folder Exclusions: Configure enterprise endpoint protection tools (such as Windows Defender, CrowdStrike, or SentinelOne) to exclude ITpipes application and staging directories from aggressive real-time scanning and false-positive quarantining, specifically "%PROGRAMDATA%\ITpipes\ITpipes Mobile\updates\".
Windows Update Service Configuration: Confirm that the background helper service (ITpipesMobileUpdater) is properly registered, running, and permitted to execute under your environment's local policies.
When to call support

- Your current ITpipes version number (found on the login or about screen).
- Any specific error message or pop-up text.
- Your connection type (e.g., office ethernet, site Wi-Fi, or mobile hotspot).
